Brunello di Montalcino wine
Montalcino is an ancient medieval village gathered on top of a gentle hill in the south of Tuscany. This area is one of the warmest and driest of the region and is home to the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine district.
This red wine is produced only in the municipal territory of Montalcino and nowhere else. The hills surrounding the town are not higher then 600 m and present the prefect soil conditions to grow such a great wine.
The history of Brunello is several centuries long, but it was only in 1800 that it started to became popular and appreciated outside the town of Montalcino. This wine was awarded the first DOCG designation. Which means that its production is controlled during the whole process and that its local origin is granted. In fact, to be called “Brunello di Montalcino” the wine has to respect a severe regulation. The Brunello is made out of only Sangiovese grapes, the color is deep red and the texture has scents of violets, blackberry, cherry, chocolate.
You cannot leave Montalcino without visiting one of the local wine companies. The majority of them are placed in the northern area of the town’s territory, just a few kilometers from the city center. You can enjoy a tour in the vineyards and in the cellars where wine is aged in wood barrels for at least 2 years. During the visit you’ll have the chance to taste Brunello di Montalcino and some other variety of local wine as the Rosso di Montalcino and the Moscadello di Montalcino.
You can buy some bottles directly from the company or in one of the wine shops of the town when strolling along the medieval streets.
